Brian:
So you just got your newest album out, your hip surgery went well, so what is in the future for mr Harmony? Are you working on a new album? New video part? New child?
Josh:
I hope to enjoy skating and making music for as long as the Lord allows. I am working on a new album now. I am doing this one at my house. I just invested in the proper tools to do so. Josh Garrels really encouraged me in this. As far as video parts go, Fallen is making a video about the touring skate life called ‘The road less traveled’. I should have some stuff in that. Also Toy Machine is putting out another video soon as well. No new kids on the way.
Brian:
Growing up these past few years in the skate world, how do you see your gifts of skating and music being used as a witness?
Josh:
I think the most practical ways I’ve seen would be in interviews and references in magazines or video parts…. My faith is no secret in the skate world and it’s interesting to see the way the Lord has used my presence there to be a light to people in its way. Whenever I get positive feedback on how my music or skating had an influence spiritually it gives me a great sense of purpose.
Brian:
Being someone who was raised in the church, what were some of the things that caused you to fall into the world for a few years, and what was it that helped straighten your walk out?
Josh:
Well, my parents raised us reading the bible and I understood the gospel from a young age but I was more of a skate rat than a youth group kid. I had always had faith in Christ but I hadn’t been born again yet so my flesh ruled my world. At a party when I was 19, I had a bong rip (unknowingly with cocaine in it) leading to one of the longest nights of my life. Waking up the next morning, thankful I wasn’t dead, I drove to my parents house and had my dad baptize me in the pool. I then went in my room and for the first time I repented and truly gave my life to Jesus. I met the Holy Spirit in a very real way that day. That straightened me out.
Brian:
All time favorite skaters and video parts?
Josh.
- Ed Templeton – Welcome to Hell
- Matt Rodriguez – Tincan Folklore
- Mark Gonzalez – Video days
- Jamie Thomas – Mislead Youth
There are too many to name but those are the ones that came to my head first.
Brian:
Fav Bible verse?
Josh:
Galatians 1:10: For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Brian:
What book of The Bible are you in right now, and what is it speaking to you?
Josh:
The Gospel Of Mark. 7:7 - ‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
7 in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
Although speaking to the Pharisses, we too as a church can be guilty of this type hypocrisy and vain worship. It is so important for christians to read the bible to not only understand what and why they believe but also to learn the attributes of God and what pleases him. Words without knowledge are poison.
Brian:
What books outside The Bible have you read or are you in that have spoke to you, and in what way?
Josh:
Chosen By God and The Holiness Of God both by R.C. Sproul
Although there may be some questions that don’t have answers this side of heaven these two books have helped me out in a number of ways concerning theodicy. Theodicy- : defense of God’s goodness and omnipotence in view of the existence of evil.
Brian:
Are you ever going to play “cats are my friends” at a live show?
Josh:
Yes.
Brian:
Are “dogs not your friends”?
Josh:
I don’t like unruly dogs but they are my friends too.
Brian:
Us both knowing Ed (Templeton) for years, and his having a major artistic voice in the skate world, and also in some of the companies you ride for, is it encouraging to see him send you graphics to do with your faith?
Josh:
It is encouraging. Although Ed is atheist, despite our differences we have a mutual respect and understanding for one another that has come from spending time talking about God ect… He just sent me a board graphic that he came up with entirely on his own with a bible verse from 2nd peter. (I will send a photo of it so you can maybe put it under this answer)
Brian:
You have any funny stories to do with being on tour in the van with guys who must have some crazy and interesting questions about The Good Book?
Josh:
I can’t really think of any stories that were “funny”… I used to get jabbed and made fun of for my faith but there is a respect now that I think has come over time. There has been a some great conversations and prayers with certain dudes over the years but I wouldn’t want to risk embarrassing anyone on here.
Brian:
When are we hanging out next, because I have been skating everyday and I need someone else to beat at skate? And I am not joking!
Josh:
YOUR ON!
Brian:
You have an hour in Starbucks with any person past or present to converse with, who and why?:
Josh:
I don’t know… Maybe my friend Aaron from Jr. high who committed suicide.
Brian:
What do you do daily to maintain balance as a believer, husband, dad, skateboarder and musician?
Josh:
Abide in the Vine.
Brian:
If someone could remember the last thought from your interview what would it be?
Josh:
Proverbs 3
Brian:
